Shooting with a Jacket and Sling
- Shooting with a Jacket and Sling
The progression from shooting with a rifle supported on a stand to shooting with the weight of the rifle held by the shooter is a large, but not difficult, step to take. This chapter covers the equipment that will be used and some of the more common methods and techniques for setting up a good prone position. At this stage the shooter will almost certainly still be a probationary member of the club and should be looking to use club equipment for their prone shooting.
When making the transition to holding the rifle without a stand the shooter should be aware that their group size may become larger. It is important to remember that this is not a backward step but is progression, with a new technique to be mastered and although it may take some time to get used to, it will ultimately lead to much smaller group sizes.
The quality of the prone position a shooter uses has a noticeable effect on the quality of their shooting. With the weight of the rifle supported on a stand or sandbag the effect of the body position in relation to the rifle and target will have only a minor effect on the outcome of each shot. When the stand is removed it is now the shooter’s body that must support the rifle and provide a stable platform with almost no movement. In this case the position of the body in relation to the rifle and target has a large effect on the outcome of each shot.
Everybody has a different shape and size, these differences mean that there is no such thing as ‘one position fits all’, this chapter will help newcomers to the sport to find the position that is right for them.
